To Sing, or not to Sing. That is the Question!!!

So Swishy got me thinking (more like cracking up) about singing all the time. I sing in the shower, around the house, in the car.....everywhere. My family is used to it, but when I'm in public, I usually try to control myself.

Key word: Usually!!!!!

But yesterday I was at the gym, wearing my I-pod. I can't listen to music and not sing, so I started by humming. Then I moved onto mouthing the words. The music was cranked really loud, and I was getting right into it as I jived to the beat, running (more like shaking) my butt off on the treadmill. Hey, whatever works.

Suddenly, I got some really strange looks, but hey, that always happens when people see you mouthing the words or quietly talking to yourself (yes, I do that too). They give you a look like "Aha! Caught ya." So I ignored them and kept right on mouthing the words.

Finally, my workout partner tapped me on the arm, so I stopped running and took off my earpieces and asked, "What?"

She said, "Me what? YOU what? What in the world are you doing?"

I said, "Uh, listening to my music and mouthing the words like I always do."

She said, "No, you were not."

Me: "Yes, I was."

Her: "Then what was all that out-of-tune screeching going on?"

Me: Gasp! "I was singing out loud?"

Her: "Honey, you were SCREAMING out loud. There's a difference."

Me: "Oh, God, was I really that bad?"

Her: "Put it this way, even people with other I-pods on heard you. Next time, stick to humming."

Lesson learned: Only wear one earpiece, so if you start to get too loud or WAY off key, you'll know it before you make a flipping fool of yourself!!!!

I've done that. It's a painful thing for everyone involved. The good news is, I'm seldom asked to start the singing at birthday parties anymore, and no one ever forces me to go to karioke night :)

That is so funny! I love to sing too... The only problem with that is I can't really sing... Oh there are times when I think I am killing it... But that's usually my bad singing killing the people around me... But I don't let that stop me. I keep singing. Loud and proud! Hey, if they don't like it they don't have to listen... :-)

In the 4th grade the leader of the youth church choir told me to just mouth the words. I have not sang anything since - yes Kari, I mouthed the words in NJ while the rest of you sang, THAT'S WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU. I don't sing.

Hmmm, I thought there was something odd about the way you were singing in NJ. Just kidding, you killed it, mouthing the words or not;))

But were you having fun? If yes, then that's all that matters!

I'm so jealous you were at the gym, by the way...

Yikes! That's one of those stories where I can almost imagine myself in your shoes. Just remember though: you'll never sound as bad as Howard Dean. :)

I do the one earbud trick too. Often, I'm doing housework and honey is trying to finish his work from home and calls his clients.. He had to tap me on the shoulder to get my attention and make me stop.

This is why I only sing in the car. :)

Funny post!

I have a friend who does that kind of thing on purpose just to see what people will do. The only time I worry is when she breaks out bad/loud opera singing to music in resteraunts -- it's so startling I start looking around for anyone in need of the heimlich.
